Four tubs, four textures, one aisle of confusion. Here’s the two questions that actually decide which one belongs in your bathroom cabinet.

Stand in front of a grooming shelf long enough and every label starts to blur together — “strong hold,” “matte finish,” “natural shine,” “medium flexible hold.” None of it means much until you know what you’re actually optimizing for.

Every styling product, no matter the brand or the buzzwords on the tin, can be placed on two simple scales: how much hold it gives your hair, and how much shine it leaves behind. Once you plot pomade, clay, wax, and paste on that grid, the choice stops being a guess.

The Hold vs. Shine Matrix

Left to right is hold, low to high. Bottom to top is shine, matte to glossy. Where a product sits on the grid tells you exactly what it will do to your hair.

POMADE

Pomade

The original slick-back product, and still the strongest hold on the shelf when you go with an oil-based formula. It lays hair down flat and glossy, resists humidity, and holds a sharp part line all day without flaking.

Water-based pomades soften that shine slightly and rinse out easier, but the trade is usually a touch less hold than the classic oil-based version.

Best for: slick backs, side parts, classic and vintage-inspired styles

CLAY

CLAY

Clay gives you the strongest hold on the matte end of the spectrum. It also adds real texture and grip to the hair shaft itself, which is why it’s the go-to for guys with thin or fine hair looking for extra thickness and volume.

It sets firmer than wax or paste as it dries, so styles hold their shape through a long day without needing a touch-up.

Best for: textured crops, fine or thin hair, natural-looking volume

MEDIUM HOLD · MEDIUM SHINE

Wax

Wax

Wax sits right in the middle of both scales, which makes it the most forgiving, all-purpose option in the lineup. It defines and separates strands cleanly, holds a shape well, and adds just enough sheen to look styled without looking wet.

It also stays workable through the day — you can rework a wax style with your fingers hours after applying it, which isn’t as easy with a firmer clay.

Best for: spiked or textured styles, everyday styling, guys who like to restyle midday

LOW-MED HOLD · MATTE

PASTE

PASTE

Paste is the lightest touch on this list — a soft, workable hold with a completely matte finish. It’s built for hair that already has decent natural texture and just needs light definition, not a full restyle.

Because the hold is gentler, it’s easy to overdo with more product than you actually need — a little goes further with paste than with any of the others here.

Best for: natural, tousled looks, medium-length styles, low-maintenance mornings

Match It to Your Hair, Not the Marketing

Skip the label copy — start from what your hair actually does, and the right product picks itself.

Fine or thin hair

Reach for clay — it adds texture and grip a pomade can’t.

Thick or coarse hair

Wax or pomade gives you enough hold to actually control it.

Want a glossy, formal finish

Pomade is the only one built for real shine.

Want an undone, natural look

Paste keeps things matte and soft, never stiff.

Restyling throughout the day

Wax stays workable longest after it’s applied.
